Interview with Nikolai Karrasch from 'Good Night Bus'

Nikolai, would you like to explain what the ‘Good Night Bus’ is?

Nikolai: The ‘Good Night Bus’ is the last stop before the night for people who live on the street. It's mainly for homeless people, but sometimes also for people in need who could do with a hot meal or some clothes in the evening. The ‘Good Night Bus’ has been around since 2011 and it started very small. Back then we simply served a pot of soup, we started with around 5 litres and now we serve 30-40 litres per evening and have an average of around 130 guests. The ‘Good Night Bus’ is simply a piece of warmth, both in material form, through clothing, through soup, but also through conversations or a final mediation, such as taking someone to an emergency shelter.

From when to when does the bus always run?

Nikolai: The bus runs all year round from Monday to Friday. The tour starts at 10 pm at Düsseldorfer Kommödchen. This is the first stop and the ‘Good Night Bus’ stops there for an hour. It then travels on to Friedrich-Ebert-Platz, opposite the main railway station, where it stops again from around 11.15 pm to midnight. Very different guests come to us, there are also different people in different places and different moods await the volunteers every evening. We have a volunteer team of around 120 people who go out all year round.
